If you play it in it's entirety after the main story, it doesn't ruin the pacing, but it also gives you a good sense of the timeline. The story wasn't built to fit Catwoman's segments in it, and the reverse also applies. This is exactly what happened to Arkham City. Skip to the next paragraph if you haven't watched Pulp Fiction, which I'm pretty sure you haven't, but if you have watched it, you probably know that the movie is not in chronological order, but that is for a good reason: if you watch the movie in chronological order, the moments that were supposed to happen at the beginning, middle and end of the movie get all mixed up and it ruins the movie's pacing, because it wasn't meant to be in chronological order. The fourth segment is pretty much an epilogue, so outside of happening literally when free roam was supposed to begin, nothing too bad about it. At least you don't have to go to the steel mill. Then there's the worst stealth section of the main story, and back to the main story. Which one of these sounds the most interesting? Of course it's the Poison Ivy and Catwoman story, so we gotta resolve that before we do any boring stuff. Oh, and I forgot to mention, but Poison Ivy is mad at Catwoman because she killed her plants. Batman is nearly dead, The Joker has escaped with Talia, and you are about to find out what Protocol 10 is. The third one is almost as bad as the first one. This is probably the one that ruins the pacing the least, because of how short it is, but still, you don't want to know what Catwoman was doing while Batman was captured, you want to know what happened to Batman. The second Catwoman segment happens after Batman gets captured by the Joker and before Joker reveals he poisoned Batman. With the Catwoman fight, you're thinking the entire time "This is boring, when do I get to do real fighting". If you ignore the Catwoman fight, the slow buildup from fighting in handcuffs, to breaking free of the handcuffs to kicking butts in your Batsuit works much better. That's basically what happens in Arkham City. Yeah, that would completely ruin the introduction because now you got a taste of the action and you want some more. Now imagine if there was a fight before that. It's a great setup to the plot and it isn't that boring on a first playthrough because it was your first introduction to the game. How does that game begin? With The Joker already apprehended and you are walking him to his cell, but oh no, he breaks loose and then the game truly begins. The first Catwoman segment happens right at the beginning of the game and it's the one that ruins the pacing the most, because the game just drops you into a fight, which is a huge mistake. Let's analyze each one of the four segments individually. Note: I will refer to Bruce/Batman mostly as you, because you play as him.īefore saying my opinion, I must admit that I have never played it separately, but I will say that it sucks as part of the main story.
